Ten Actions to Conserve Water at Home

Roseland residents can consider the following actions to help conserve water which will reduce not only the cost of your water bill, but utility bills as well.

  1. Run clothes and dishwashers only when you have a full load.
  2. Try to limit the time you spend in the shower. Unrestricted faucets use about 5 to 10 gallons per minute.
  3. Avoid letting the water run while brushing your teeth or washing your face.
  4. Teach children to ensure indoor and outdoor faucets are shut off completely.
  5. When replacing fixtures, install water saving models.
  6. Avoid excessive watering. Most lawns only need about an inch of water a week.
  7. If you have an automatic sprinkler system, inspect it regularly for leaks.
  8. Ensure you have an automatic rain detection system that is in working order to prevent automatic sprinklers from watering while it’s raining.
  9. To minimize water evaporation, water your grass and plants later in the evening or early in the morning.
  10. Keep your grass between 2-3 inches long to maximize root growth and water retention.
